ROAD TRIP: CORNWALL, SOUTHWEST ENGLAND
the most fun road trip ever! being the first few to finish the exams, we got on the net, rented car (which we later nicknamed Dido, after the band whose album became the soundtrack for the trip), and zoomed off. Of course, we had grand visions of doing the "Thelma and Louise" but the extremely cold waters put us off frm driving off the cliff. Plus we love ourselves too much to do something like that. PLUS, we were too young and beautiful to die. :)
At some point, samar took over the driving. Was a short ride, but it felt lek the longest. she started the car. almost hit a Z3 with license plate ROB7."which ride of the road am i supposed to drive on?!". "LEFT!!!!!!" was the chorus of horror. car swerved left. i shut my eyes. lest i die, i won't see the bloody mess. up the slope. car stalled. uh-oh. car slides backwards. UH-OH. sandy to the rescue. handbrake. silence. end of samar's driving career.
the tanning was _good_. for the first few days at least. it didnt feel lek england. it felt lek south of spain. Torquay-Newquay-Foey-Padstow-Lizard's Peninsular-LandsEnd-Falmouth. we did nothing but hopped from one beach to another. when we got back to london, we look quite out of place next to our pasty-skinned classmates. and we look gooooood. :) but england being england, the cloudy days returned on the last couple of days. I can't quite remember how we spent those days.. i think just cruising from one cute little town to another. oh, we chased some strange, vaguely cute english boys in a beat-up jalopy on the highway. no, maybe they chased us first. watever. that was fun. they should make it into a sport.
the hostels were dodgy. but one nite at a farm bed and breakfast was cool. and the best nites were at falmouth (my fave town!). little hotel that looks lek nothing on the outside, but has everything on the inside. after we begged and begged the hotel lady for a discount, (telling her we were poor students from london, and our parents from the 3rd world had to sell their skins to send us there to study), we had a _penthouse_. with a view. of the ocean and the sunset. big armchairs. where we sat listening to the seagulls. big beds. with soft fluffy pillows. Tv, with cable. clean bathroom. with towels, bathrobes and a big tub. we spent our last 2 nights there.
i could eat cornish pasties everyday, everymeal. that's the best food england cld offer. but i can't say the same for cornish skrumpy - some kind of beer, i think. well, it's not impt. it just tastes pretty bad.
samar wanted to get drank everynite. but everynite, lulwa and i were too dead tired to go anywher. i guess it's the age difference. postgrads and undergrads. the last nite was a blur. i vaguely remember having dinner at a place called spanish fly. we took a walk pub across road. had a tequila shot each. or maybe two. i dun remember. downstairs was a live band. we danced to one song. the last song. i dun remember. walked out to the seaside. too cold. we did something between leaving the seaside and going bk to the hotel. i dun remember. we were talking. we each had some story. i dun remember. lulwa sobbed and sobbed over the phone. with who, over what. i dun remember. but those pictures lulwa had of us at the pub were hilarious. i wish i cld put them up.
